Revolutionary Boston
In the 1770s Boston was a city of about fifteen thousand people carrying the weight of an empire’s anger. The Boston Massacre in 1770 and the Boston Tea Party in 1773 turned a port town into the flashpoint of the American Revolution, and by 1775 the city was under siege.

Between 1940 and 1941 the Blitz brought the war to Britain’s doorstep: nightly air raids, blackout curtains, children evacuated to the countryside, and a country holding its breath. Everyday life became an act of endurance.
It was also a war fought in secret. Britain ran its sabotage and resistance work through the Special Operations Executive, which recruited women as couriers and wireless operators and sent them into occupied Europe under false names. Their work stayed classified for decades after the war ended.
